Upcoming:
March 29, 2025 @ Old Town School of Folk Music, Chicago, IL:
Song Structure as a Storytelling Device: A Songwriting Workshop with Kacie Swierk
ADULT GROUP CLASS / SONGWRITING PROGRAM
In this workshop we will focus on how song structure can be used as a storytelling device. Looking at both traditional and non-traditional organization, we’ll explore the many options of how verses, pre-choruses, choruses, and bridges can function (or not function!) to aid a song’s meaning. Once we lay down a foundation of what a ‘normal’ song structure might look like, we’ll break down songs like The Beatles’ “Love Me Do,” Billie Eilish’s “bury a friend,” and Roy Orbison’s “In Dreams,” and will begin to see how breaking the rules might help us tell a story.
Guided by prompts and teamed in groups, we’ll then take some time to play around with structure ourselves.
*All levels encouraged and appreciated
*No instruments or previous work should be brought to this workshop – new ideas only ☺
*Please bring pencil and paper
